John Grey

CHEESE

He looks through the lens
at his four children.

In these moments,
he's no longer the father
but the professional photographer
determined that
the poses, the presentation,
will be nothing less
than frame-worthy.

One girl has the sniffles.
A boy needs to pee.
For all his cajoling,
kids do not occupy a stationary world.

He shouts, "Say cheese"
and then presses the button anyhow.
A fidget, a face-pull, an anxiousness .
a grimace instead of a smile -
strange how the camera is the last to know.
